1972 Naha & 1973 Cubi deployment journals
These were
hand-written daily journals which I kept through most of the 72 Naha
deployment and all of the 73 Cubi deployment. Last year, former crewmember Sid Hanisee asked for a copy of
the Cubi journal, so I typed it up
in order to make it legible for him. And since I also had notes from the '72
Naha deployment, I typed them up as well. Fortunately, Sid was able to read
both journals and to recall a few happier moments during the final months of
his life. Jenene said it cheered him up immensely at a time when he was
extremely ill. And so, these journals are dedicated to Sid.
Here's one sample entry from the 1972 Naha
journal
Tuesday 7 Mar 1972.
Noted log entry that a VP-17 1st
Class Petty Officer (Snake Stoglin) was arrested by base air police for
riding his motorcycle without a license. He was placed in the custody of Lt
Purdy. The next morning, Lt Purdy is reported to be in the custody of the
air police for: a) riding his motorcycle without a license; b) no license
plates; c) no title, bill of sale or registration. Purdy is released, the
motorcycle impounded.

LAUNCH 'EM
(the movie)
Ever wanted to own a copy of that crazy old Navy film
called LAUNCH 'EM? It was filmed in 1956 in black and white by
VF-121 (flying F9F-8 Cougars) on board USS Hancock while heading home
to San Diego from a WestPac deployment. Personally, I hadn't seen it since
the early 1970s and wondered if perhaps it had simply disappeared into a
black hole somewhere. Then someone directed me to
the web site maintained by the Association of Naval Aviation. While there, I
went to the "Store" page and, bingo, there was LAUNCH 'EM. I
ordered it ($5.00 total including shipping) and received it via U.S. Mail
three days later. It's only 12 minutes long, cornier than any Three
Stooges movie, but has a couple of very good moments. It really is a
classic. One star, but recommended nevertheless. If interested, here's the
link to the ANA web site. Look for the "Store" page or contact the ANA via
the e-mail address listed.
http://www.anahq.org/index.htm
Sorry, the ANA no longer exists. The ANA
"Store" has closed. No idea whether or where Launch 'em is available
nowadays.
