John B. Carter receives Distinguished Service Award

Our friend, Johnny B. Carter received the most prestigious award given by Georgia Tech last week.  It was much deserved by a man who has come to be known as the "King Bee" (the mascot for GATECH is the Yellow Jacket).  You may remember as Squadron Schedules Officer that we seemed to have a number of training flights to California on the weekends during the fall.  In case you didn't know, that was so John could see the Yellow Jackets play real time on TV.  In the 35 years he has been back in Atlanta, he has missed only a hand full of games.  During his reign as Alumni Director and as President of the GATECH foundation, he has been personally responsible for "engineering"  gazillions of dollars toward an endowment of $1.6 Billion.  This award is a big deal among Tech Alumni and the Atlanta business community.  The ovation he received from the attendees was huge.  The Overends were proud to be at the dinner honoring him.

John's acceptance speech

Here is a YouTube video made by Mary Overend with her smart phone.  She and Barbara, a Tech Grad (John gave her almost no choice but to go to Tech) were there for the festivities.
